Nananu-i-Ra Diving
Nananu-i-Ra island is a popular scuba diving area. The island is located on the north-eastern tip of the main island of Viti Levu. From here it is possible to see the distant island of Vanua Levu, Fiji's second largest island. The passage of water that separates the two islands is called the Vatu-I-Ra Channel and is part of the Bligh Waters, named after the voyager, Captain William Bligh, navigated a long boat and 18 faithful crew through the passage as part of his mammoth 6,700 km journey to Indonesia following the famous mutiny on the Bounty in Tonga when he was cast adrift. The ocean here, fed by the south-east trades, is rich in nutrients and has led to the formation of prolific marine life.
The accessible white sandy beaches and different types of resorts on Nananu-i-Ra island makes it an attractive destination for domestic tourists from Suva and backpackers travelling through North of Viti Levu. Dive sites include Dream Maker, The Maze, Shark Junction, The Pinnacle. There are a number of budget resorts such as Betham's, Charlie's Place and McDonalds, or for more stylish accommodation, there is the Safari Lodge or the Nananu Beach Reort.
On the mainland across from Nananu-i-Ra in a region known as the Sun Coast, are a couple of resorts, one budget - Volivoli Beach Resort - and one deluxe - Wananavu Resort & Spa. Both these resorts organise dive tours to the dive sites in this region. In fact Ra Divers is one of the main dive operators here, is based at Volivoli and services all the properties mentioned above.
