Dive the Lomaiviti region

Lomaiviti is translated as 'central Fiji'. The term is given to a vast area of ocean surrounded by the larger Fijian islands. Dotted in this central ocean are many distantly separated small islands, such as Ovalau, Wakaya, Gau, Koro, Nairai, Batiki, Toberua and Naigani. Since the geographical area is so large, this has meant that it has never been over-exploited and dive sites in the region are remote and pristine. To the north of Lomaiviti is Namena Island, which is encircled by more excellent reefs.

The resort islands in the region include the exclusive Wakaya Club, Toberua Island, Naigani Island, and Moody's Namena. On the larger island of Ovalau are a number of places to stay. Levuka, the main town, is a quaint example of Colonial Fiji and indeed was once the Fijian capital prior to its relocation to Suva on the mainland. Ovalau Watersports is a dive operator right in town that runs diving trips to many of the reefs in this area, visiting more than 20 dive sites.

Accessing Lomaiviti's great diving

To dive the Lomaiviti dive sites, one must either stay at one of several resort locations mentioned above, or otherwise hop on board a diving liveaboard such as the Nai'a. Their excellent accommodated dive cruising trips take in many remote and beautiful reefs of Lomaiviti as well as the Namena reefs and Bligh Water reefs, with their itineraries usually starting and ending at Lautoka, a 30 minute drive north from Fiji's International airport at Nadi.
