Dive Kadavu's Astrolabe Reef
The Astrolabe Reef is one of the world's largest reefs, in fact the third or fourth largest, and provides an abundance of excellent diving opportunities to divers visiting Fiji. Created from past volcanic activity and plate movements, it stretches for over 120 km and, and with the rich ocean currents feeding the reef from the South Pacific Ocean, the biodiversity of the coral species is superlative. The reef gets its name from the ship 'The Astrolabe' belonging to French explorer Dumont d'Urville, which collided with the reef in 1827.
Dive Sites on the Great Astrolabe Reef
There are many excellent dive sites on this reef. Enjoy encounters with graceful manta rays and watch huge pelagics such as wahoo and marlin, which although seasonal can often be seen. The Naigoro Passage Marine Reserve is easily accessed from Waisalima; it is a marine breeding ground for many fish species. Spectacular diving is possible in this unexploited remote reef and excellent visibility ranges are possible. Most dive sites are also equally accessible by snorkellers, making this a versatile reef to explore on your next diving holiday to Fiji.
